In the Media: Huskies stay hot
The hits just keep on coming for the North Marion baseball team, which won three games in three days last week to improve to 10-1 on the season.
The Huskies took a 2-1 win over Astoria Wednesday to finish the week that started with back-to-back 5-4 wins against Lakeridge and Tillamook.
The wins pushed North Marion briefly into the No. 1 in the OSAA polls before the team was bumped from the top spot by unbeaten Henley from the Skyline Conference.
Regardless of rankings, the team’s 10 wins are tops in the state at any classification and have the team humming as the Huskies prepare to move into their league schedule this week.
North Marion finished the week against the 2013 Cowapa Conference champion Astoria Fishermen, taking a 1-0 lead in the opening inning en route to the team’s third one-run victory of the season.
Kyle Williamson opened the game with a walk that he eventually turned into the Huskies’ opening run on an RBI from Emry Patterson.
The two teams traded scoreless frames until the top of the fifth inning when Astoria tied the game at 1-1. Neither team could take advantage in regulation, as the game went into extra innings.
After giving up one run while striking out seven, North Marion starting pitcher Jordan Kendall turned the ball over to Patterson to open the eighth inning.
Patterson picked up the win in relief after keeping the Fishermen scoreless, while Nat Barrell scored on a single by Brock Breshears to win the game.
Tristan Wampole and Colin Barrow finished the game with a team-high two hits each.
The day before, the Huskies traveled to Tillamook, scoring early to give the team just enough of a cushion to hold off a Cheesemaker rally in the fourth inning of the 5-4 win.
North Marion scored three runs in the opening inning and two more in the second to take a 5-0 lead behind the timely hitting of Patterson, who finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs.
Tillamook responded with four runs in the top of the fourth, but neither team was able to score the rest of the way and the Huskies held on for the win.
Williamson scored two runs in the game, and Wampole went 2-for-3 with an RBI. On the mound, Breshears pitched a complete game, spreading out seven hits over seven innings to go along with seven strikeouts.
North Marion opened the week at home on March 31, hosting the Lakeridge Pacers, the No. 9 team in the 6A classification.
Once again, the team opened the game with an early score to take the advantage in the 5-4 win.
Lakeridge tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third before Breshears broke the game open with a double in the bottom of the fifth to drive in three runs. The Huskies tacked on one more run to take a 5-1 lead, which was just enough pull out the win. Lakeridge made it 5-2 in the sixth and added two more runs in the seventh before Kendall closed the door in the final inning of relief.
Hunter Beachy got the win by pitching the first six innings, and Williamson went 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
With preseason over, the Huskies turn their sights toward the conference schedule, beginning with a game at Molalla that was scheduled for Monday. The Huskies host the Indians Wednesday to finish the week, taking the next six days off before facing La Salle on April 15.
