North Marion has plenty of winning tradition within its own league, and the Huskies hope they can take that success on a state playoff run in 2014.

Despite Tuesday’s 4-2 loss to La Salle Prep, North Marion (12-2) remains No. 1 in the OSAA’s Class 4A rankings. The Huskies had won 11 consecutive

wins prior to losing to the No. 2 Falcons, a team they’ll face in a Tri-Valley League rematch Thursday at La Salle.

North Marion, the defending TVL champion, hasn’t made a bona fide state tournament run since 2005, when the Huskies reached the 3A semifinals. But this year’s team has potential to change that, as the bulk of the last year’s lineup returned this spring.

Among North Marion’s top players are the league’s reigning pitcher of the year (Brock Breshears) and player of the year (shortstop Kyle Williamson). Also back is a first-team all-stater in first baseman Tristan Wampole.

“I like this team a lot, just because we can do a lot of different things,” North Marion coach Randy Brack said. “This is the best total team since I came back to coaching in 2009.”

Breshears, who won his first five starts this spring, “doesn’t overpower you, he just outsmarts you. He puts balls in play, because he knows we can play defense,” Brack said.

Williamson and Wampole are both hitting better than .400 this spring.
