TURNER - North Marion jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Cascade on Monday afternoon, but the Cougars took full advantage of six free passes to outpace the Huskies 5-3.
North Marion jumped on Cascade starter Spencer Crawford early with three runs off of two hits. Jordan Kendall scored Shane McKillip and Emry Patterson on a well-hit double that rolled to the deep wall in right-center field. A third run came into score on a dropped popup by the Cougars' outfield.
After a smooth first inning, Kendall struggled to find his rhythm atop the mound for North Marion. The Huskies right-hander only surrendered three hits, but he issued three walks and hit a batter in four innings of work. Kendall was relieved in the fifth inning by Schmitz with the game tied at 3.
Off of Schmitz, Cascade drew a walk and hit a ground-rule double to jump out in front 5-3.
Coming off of two consecutive games of 10 or more hits, the Huskies offense went ice cold as the game wore on. North Marion could only muster two hits in the final four innings, keeping the bases mostly clear for Crawford who pitched the full seven innings for Cascade.
Both clubs tallied just six hits in the contest, but Cascade used five walks and a hit batter while the Huskies didn't draw a single walk. North Marion struck out seven times.
Patterson finished the game with two hits, the senior's third consecutive multi-hit day. Kendall picked up a pair of RBIs to run his team-leading season total to 23.
The Huskies begin their final trip around the Oregon West Conference circuit on Wednesday with a trip to Yamhill-Carlton. North Marion is looking for a three-game sweep of the Tigers after claiming two games to begin league play. First pitch is set for 4:30pm at Y-C.
